This is a very cool personal project by Barton Smith of We Are Thinking Out Loud of Sydney, Australia.

Barton took it upon himself to redesign the Facebook experience with a completely revamped interface and navigation system inspired by Skimmer (app for Facebook/Twitter). This design looks much more elegant and stylish than the current version.

The Facebook Facelift is a self initiated project to challenge the form and functionality of Facebook. It's streamlined, structured and linear interface is more comprehendible, enhancing the user experience and absorbability of content. More info HERE.

A few examples of the wonderful work being done by barcelona-based artist Marta Cerdà Alimbau, which I came across on Behance a few days ago.

Project: Collaboration for the exhibitions of www.gofonturself.com.au and for the Ship of Fools exhibition "Don't belive the type". I tryed to make a tacky, kitch, vulgar and acid piece, where we can read some lines of the world we are living in. Very aged and retro, as if it was part of an old ridiculous civilization, allready dead. We try to make letters beautful, more attractive, more visible, when many times, consciuos or not, the content of the message we're working on is totally wrong. This is an exaggeration, it's not ment to be a beautiful typographical piece, it's more a personal refletion.

"The Kingdom Animalia, a line of wooden animals and their packaging, were all made in the USA. The boxes are made of recycled cardboard, and offset printed. One element of the design system is that there are a few facts about the real life animal on the box. There are 15 different animals in this collection. They are made of sustainably harvested wood and are solid maple. The finishes on the animals (including the paint, stain, and beeswax sealer) are all non-toxic and very low/no VOC. All of the finishes are also made in the USA. They were laser cut and hand finished. They are meant to be decoration for a nursery, bookshelf, and the like. Coolest LEGO video ever! 8-Bit Trip is a stop motion LEGO video tribute to classic video games. It was created by the Swedish band Rymdreglage after 1,500 hours of work. I am sure you all are aware about the Vodafone Zoozoo ads. The beauty of this ads is they dont have any celebrities nor good musical background but still they are entertaining and humorous.

Six months ago, Vodafone briefed its agency, Ogilvy India, to create uncommon characters a common thread to link the ads in the campaign together. Rajiv Rao, executive creative director, South Asia, Ogilvy India, tells afaqs! that the only starting point for the team was that the character had to be simple to a stupefying level. And thus, the Zoozoo was born.

No, they arent animated characters. They are human beings who were made to wear body suits. The design of the characters is such that one gets fooled into thinking it is animation, shrugs Rao, which was indeed the very illusion that had to be created. In a sense, it is live animation! he quips, referring to the fact that it was all shot live.

Prakash Varma, ad filmmaker, Nirvana Films, has directed the commercials, and reveals that the Zoozoos were a big challenge to create. The practical aspects of how they will move, talk, gesticulate and emote were very important. Essentially, costume design and artwork were crucial elements.

Have trouble choosing the right color for a website or project? My friend turned me on to Color Scheme Designer today and i'm already used it for some of my work. Very useful Javascript tool for developing a suite of colors that “play well together.”

Color Scheme Designer uses a color wheel to dynamically control color hues on the palette. The color wheel has a number of very interesting options. For example, you can select between 1, 2, 3, and 4 color schemes, labeled “Mono,” “Complement,” “Triad,” and “Tetrad.” The red arrow in the screenshot shows my choice of a “triad” scheme, which results in three circles on the color wheel. The black circle (purple arrow) is the main hue. The other two white circle (green arrows) represent the other two components of the triad. Selecting one of the white circles allows you to change the angles between the triad elements, resulting in marked differences in the color scheme. You can also specify the exact angle by clicking on the number.

Saturation and brightness are controlled on a dedicated pane selected below the color wheel (selection tab is left of red box highlighting the currently shown Hue pane). Saturation and brightness are applied globally, so that all the colors are affected equally and appropriately.

Just move your cursor around the color wheel and you can get instant color scheme. After that you can export the color pallete into HTML,XML,Text, Photoshop palette and also Gimp palette.

This is an awesome tool for web design, easily translate into a way to develop color schemes for other project too! Highly recomended!

Reach is a great little CG-animated film by Luke Randall. Originally from the island of Tasmania, Luke Randall is a director/animator currently based in Melbourne, Australia. Luke has been fortunate enough to work on CG TV series, video game cinematic and animated feature films over the past couple of years and has received several awards for his work.

A tiny robot is given the gift of life with only one limitation, the length of his power cable. When a curious bird appears at the workshop window, the robot feels a lust to live outside of his reach that may be his demise.

There are many programs out there, that create fractal drawings. But this, is by far the coolest one I have ever seen. Not only is it a web based app, meaning there is now downloading necessary, but it is also, extremely easy to use. The myoats site, which can be found at www.myoats.com, is a great site. There are many features with this site that you can use once you create the graphic, like downloading it, and saving it, if you sign up for the site. There are options while creating the design like the gradient background, or the color of the line. So go ahead, play around with this site, and have fun with it! Maybe even create a new wallpaper for your computer? The possibilities are endless!

Gimp Quick Tip: Adding Stroke to Text

Here's my first Gimp Quick Tip for the blog. How to add a colored stroke around text! This can be used to add definition to text, and make it stand out more. So here's how to do it.

1. Add text to your document. A bolded font looks good with a stroke around it.

2. On the text layer, right click, and press "Alpha to Selection". This will create a selection around the text that will be used to create the stroke

3. After the selection is made, go to Select>Grow. Chose your grow amount, and the selection will grow.

4. Create a new layer below the text layer, and fill the selection with the stroke color. Deselect and there you have it, your newly stroked text!

Gimp Quick Tip: Keep Aspect

One of the most basic transformations in Gimp is capable of scaling an image. To scale an image / graphic, we go to Image > Scale Image or select the Scale tool in toolbox. Often times, you’ll find it necessary to constrain the proportions of your objects when scaling.

Holding down the Ctrl key while scaling maintain the ratio of the image. Another way to maintain the ratio of the image without holding the Ctrl key is by selecting the keep aspect box.

Gimp Tutorial: Add HDR-like effect to a normal potrait picture.

Following my series of Gimp tutorials, I will show you how to add HDR-like effect to a normal potrait picture in Gimp. I used a photo of a man that I found on sxc.hu. If you like this tutorial, leave a comment and i hope you enjoy it. Cheers!! :)

Before we start this tutorial,let's take a look at the original image and the final image below:

In this tutorial I will show you my technique to add HDR-like effect to a normal potrait photo. The technique used some basic Gimp filter like Unsharp Mask and Neon, and also playing with layer mode.

Note: For this tutorial, you need to download the image HERE. I'm using Gimp 2.6 for this tutorial. So without further ado here is the tutorial:

1. Open the image in Gimp

2. Duplicate the layer. Next, go to Filters > Enhance > Unsharp Mask.

3. I use 45.0 for the Radius, 1.50 for the Amount amd 0 for the Threshold.

4. Renamed the layer as "unsharpmask".

5. Duplicate the "unsharpmask" layer. I'll name this one as "overlay unsharpmask".

6. Next, at the "overlay unsharpmask" layer, I'll add a layer mask.

7. Fill the layer mask with black color.

8. Select the Brush tool. Select Circle Fuzzy brush, Scale= 10.0 and low the opacity of the brush to 50.0.

9. Set the Foreground Color to White and begin painting directly on the Layer Mask. You're looking to paint over all the areas where there are highlights. To strengthen things like the wrinkles, you should paint light next to the dark but not over it.

10. Next, duplicate "unsharpmask" layer and renamed it as "neon".

11. Put the "neon" layer above all layer.

12. Next, go to Filters > Edge Detect > Neon.

13. I use 6.0 for the radius and 0 for the amount.

14. Change the "neon" layer mode to Screen.

15. For final adjustment, duplicate the neon layer and low the opacity to 50.

Finish.
